Long years of development went into the patented thermosensitive Metamo ink that gives the Pilot Frixion line its main selling point. One of the most difficult tasks was to increase the temperature range for when the color appeared and disappeared.
Microcapsules that form the pigmentation contain an equal mix of three substances:
1) special types of dye that change between colored and colorless forms
2) color developer
3) compounds that regulate the temperature at which the color transition will take place
When you rub the ink with the hard rubber eraser, heat from the resulting friction causes the temperature-sensing compound to activate the acid compounds, thus neutralizing the dye.
That’s what makes the ink virtually disappear!
Because of its heat-reacting properties, the ink may reappear when temperatures reach below -10° C (under 14° Fahrenheit).
It’s best to not leave the ink out in hot cars or other conditions that may subject it to vigorous friction, or it may disappear. If your writing should disappear due to heat exposure, simply place into a freezer for a short time and the writing will reappear.
